What is going on here? Looks like their faces are scratched out and like they're hanging!

it is a weird snapshot in a weird and frigthening period , the year 1941. This painting remind me that god was forbiden , which could explain the scratched faces, but yes, you mentionned a point I hadn't noticed first : why are they hanging ?
it is so weird; like a babayaga tale...
